We work with homeowners to create beautiful, sustainable and functional homes designed specifically for their site, household, lifestyle and budget.
What makes a home feel truly alive? Is it the way sunlight moves through each room during the day, the gentle connection between inside and out, or the feeling that your space simply belongs to you, to the land and to the life you live every day?
As home architects in Melbourne, we believe a home should do more than stand beautifully. It should breathe, evolve and connect with its natural environment. Every detail matters: the warmth of natural materials, the flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, and the quiet sense of balance that comes from thoughtful design. Whether you're planning a new build or a renovation, our purpose is simple: to create homes that bring calm, comfort and meaning to everyday life.
Embarking on a renovation or new build is exciting, but we understand it can also be stressful, daunting or uncertain. That's why our process gives you critical, honest information upfront and sets achievable expectations for both the process and the outcome. We help you answer the questions that matter most:
What is realistic for the property or building?
Will regulations allow it?
How will it perform?
How much will it cost?
How do we attract the right builders?
How long will it take?
Our answers are based on designing hundreds of successful sustainable homes. They inform the feasibility and scope of your project and help you feel confident in every choice and decision.
As our client, you'll have one integrated team managing your project. We have structured our practice so that a director and project architect are dedicated to your house from start to finish, and remain your point of contact throughout the entire process. They manage every stage, from concept design, council approvals and design development to building approvals, tendering, construction management and contracts. This gives our projects real integrity and consistency, and gives you clarity and clear communication.
Every home tells a story about the people who live there. We listen before we design, and it's this balance between thoughtful design and genuine understanding that makes each project feel personal, purposeful and quietly enduring.
You're not just another project. We start by understanding how you live, what you value, the site you're on and what you hope your home will be. Together, we explore how the design can respond to your everyday needs and your longer-term vision.
With over 30 years of experience working throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria, we know how to navigate site conditions, planning regulations, local builders and the climate. Our main office is in Richmond, with a second studio in Jan Juc on the Surf Coast. That means fewer surprises, better-informed decisions and stronger value.
We'll hand-pick and manage, or connect you with, a talented and trustworthy team of suppliers and consultants, such as landscape architects, engineers and building surveyors, to complement our design team and your project. Like us, they focus on honesty, quality, innovation, value and sustainability.
We're not designing for ourselves; we're designing for you. We work with you closely and stay open and honest throughout, helping you stay in control of budget, time and quality while we manage the practical details of construction and timeline.
We don't treat sustainable architecture as an extra; it's the foundation of every home we design. From orientation and passive design to efficient systems and thoughtful material choices, we make sure your home works well today and for decades to come. For homes designed and certified to the full standard, see our Passive House architecture in Melbourne and Victoria.
Every site has a story. We look at orientation, views, light, neighbourhood character and the natural environment. Our Anglesea Passive House was shaped to sit gently within its bushland surroundings, minimising disruption to vegetation and reflecting its coastal character.
We believe in the richness of natural materials: timber, recycled brick, low-toxicity finishes and local craftsmanship. In our Eco House in Fitzroy North, we used recycled bricks and locally sourced timbers to deliver a high-performing, healthy home. These choices support aesthetics, durability, comfort and long-term value.
A home that looks good is not enough. Through shading, natural airflow, solar planning and renewable energy systems, our homes stay comfortable and efficient through every season. Spaces are bathed in natural light and fresh air, many generate their own energy and collect their own rainwater, and every one is built to last.
Discovery and briefing: We start with a conversation about you, your lifestyle, your site, your budget and your aspirations, setting a foundation of trust and clarity.
Concept and feasibility: We explore layout options, orientation, materials, performance goals and budget, testing ideas early so you can make informed choices.
Design development and approvals: We refine the design, engage consultants, finalise materials and systems, and navigate planning and permit pathways.
Documentation and tendering: We produce detailed drawings and specifications, invite builders and help you select the right team to bring your home to life.
Construction and delivery: We stay involved during construction to support quality, protect the design intent, and keep the timeline and handover on track.
Post-occupancy review: Once you've moved in, we check in to reflect, fine-tune where needed and help your home serve you and your family as well as possible.
What does a residential architect do?
A residential architect designs your home around your site, lifestyle and budget, then manages the project through approvals, builder tendering and construction. At Zen Architects, a director and project architect oversee every stage from concept to completion.
Do you design new homes and renovations?
Yes. We work with homeowners on both new builds and renovations, applying the same sustainable design approach to each.
Where do you work?
We design homes throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria, from our main office in Richmond and our second studio in Jan Juc on the Victorian Surf Coast.
Can you help us find a builder?
Yes. We prepare detailed documentation, invite builders to tender and help you select the right team for your project.
