Essendon Courtyard House
Design Philosophy
The Essendon Courtyard house is inspired by the clients’ beliefs in Feng Shui and Zen Architects’ expertise in innovative sustainable design. These complementary philosophies are expressed by the organisation of spaces around and above the courtyard, giving priority to rooms requiring direct sun for passive solar gain.

The east/west sloping block has no views at ground level so the internal courtyard provides light, privacy and a garden aspect. The courtyard allows winter sun to penetrate the building, while providing shade and cooling breezes during summer. The upper levels capture the distant views of the city skyline, nearby river environs and adjoining gardens.
Sustainable Design Elements
  • Passive heating through north-oriented windows and courtyard and summer shading from deep eaves
  • Passive cooling by cross-ventilation through adjustable external louvres opening onto landscaped courtyard
  • Passive cooling through three-storey stair void as ‘thermal chimney’
  • Roof space ventilation provided via the eaves
  • Thermal mass as concrete floor and brick walls
  • High performance thermal insulation and double glazing
  • The indigenous garden requires minimal water and maintenance while encouraging local wildlife
