Design Philosophy
The Point Roadknight Solar House is a holiday house for a large, blended family with 8 children, demanding a robust design able to cope with large groups of people at one time.To minimise impact on the delicate site, significant moonah trees were retained, the building was raised off the ground on timber stumps and an indigenous garden was created.
Large north-facing glazing, opening onto a large deck, provides passive heating. The deep eave to the north provides summer shading. Passive cooling is provided by natural ventilation. Thermal mass is provided in the bagged concrete block internal walls. The detailing of the building was simple to allow for a cost-effective and straightforward construction process, allowing the owners to administer the building process themselves.
