Banbury Village involves the design of 34 new houses in Footscray to set a new standard in medium density sustainable housing design. Zen Architects designed 4 house types to provide maximum development yield within the opportunities and constraints presented by the site types and orientation.
The types included a terrace house and a semi detached house both with north to the rear and a semi detached house with north to the front. North to the front is the most difficult orientation to incorporate passive solar design into. This is because traditionally living rooms, which benefit from northern sun, usually open onto the privacy of the back yard, not the front yard. This created an opportunity for Zen Architects to develop the ‘upside-down house’ concept. Living rooms on the first floor are able to benefit from unobstructed solar gain while enjoying privacy from the street allowed from being on an upper level. The living rooms are also afforded sunset and city vistas and can catch southerly breezes for natural cooling.
