The Miridian Amenities facility is a barbecue shelter, public toilet and storage building as part of a new playground landscape in a public park in Dandenong South. The client was Vicurban, for whom Zen Architects designed the Sustainable Affordable Housing Initiative houses which are adjacent to this facility.
The twisted curved roof of the BBQ shelter provides a striking form in the new landscape . The form of the roof responds to the climate of the site, lifting up to the north to allow winter sun in while blocking out afternoon summer sun. The louvred mesh lining of the roof further filters the sun seasonally.
The curved form of the toilet structure, a contemporary interpretation of the French ‘Pissoir’ concept, sits comfortably in the natural landscape below established gum trees. The structure is wheelchair accessible and includes a composting toilet and baby changing facilities.
