The main intervention is the provision of a new entry on the north side of the building to allow for ease of movement between the church building and the new reception rooms for social gatherings after ceremonies in the church. Upon entering the new reception, visitors are greeted with a welcoming kitchen creating a warm homely feeling for the community. The adjacent classrooms are then converted into reception rooms to cater for small social gatherings and a 100-seat function room. The Kitchen also provides storage for the food bank charity that the church operates.
The St. Ambrose building is the transformation of a school building into a multi-purpose community facility for the Catholic Church on Sydney Road in Brunswick. The six classrooms of the former school building are transformed to cater for a diverse range of functions including reception rooms, prayer groups, asylum seeker social rooms, mother’s groups meeting rooms and other community facilities.
The change of use of the building has required the building to comply with BCA and DDA requirements for equal access. This conversion provides an opportunity to use rooms designed for the purposes of a school as unique rooms in their new life. For example the long narrow locker room /corridor that enjoys excellent solar gain and views to the bluestone church, becomes a dynamic multi-purpose space for holding community meetings.
