The Clifton Hill Dual Occupancy is set on a large inner urban block that has been sub-divided to provide two separate four bedroom houses. The client emphasized the need for these to be high quality family homes with generous spaces and excellent passive solar design as they felt this type of house was lacking in the area. The site was located in a residential heritage area with an industrial component and the design reflects the juxtaposition of these two quite different aesthetics.
The block is oriented with north to the front which is a notoriously difficult orientation for passive solar homes as living areas are normally oriented to the rear for privacy. The design solution is a north facing open space on the street to the front unit that is given privacy through dense landscaping and fencing. The new building at the rear is accessed via a shared driveway and has been set back to the southern end of the block creating a large north facing private open space with unobstructed sun.
